Yass Valley Council (YVC) and Dr Mike Kelly MP officially opened the Riverbank Park fitness stations on Saturday, April 22 in front of about 40 attendees, including David Ault – vice president of Yass Valley Sports Council. It was a project that began in 2014–15 and made possible by the combined efforts of YVC, local businesses, community organisations and the federal government’s stronger regions communities programs.
Yass Valley Mayor Rowena Abbey on behalf of council thanked all those involved in helping make the project possible: Federal Government (grant), Yass Rotary, Bendigo Bank, Lions Club, Mt Carmel School, Yass Runners, Yass Rams Rugby Club, Yass Football Club, Rob Pollack Concreting and YVC.
“All of those community groups have added to this project from a beautiful idea. A lot of the [council] staff put in a lot of time and effort and particularly when they’re passionate about a project like this one,” Cr Abbey said.
“I thank them for putting in time not only as council staff but also personally.”
As part of the official opening, six local personal trainers gave residents a free training session.
“The lovely thing we also have are trainers, who love putting people through their paces,” Cr Abbey said. ”I’d also like to thank the trainers on behalf of the community for giving their time this morning to help us,” she said.
In attendance was Dr Mike Kelly MP, who said the facilities add to the strong sporting culture in Yass. “This is also a magnificent location to encourage people to be be active. Really, that’s a key.”
Dr Kelly also spoke about the importance of physical activities in preventing mental health issues.
