The Australian Hotel Yass Roos secured a dominant win over the Batemans Bay Seahawks to start their 2017 season on Saturday, April 22. The final score was Yass 27-21-183 to Batemans Bay 2-2-14. The Seahawks were down a couple of players and never really troubled the Roos.

It was a particularly pleasing win because the Roos also have several handy players to come into the side as the season progresses. Some new recruits have been added to the Roos line-up and many regulars have been retained.
One recruit who shot out of the blocks was Adam Curtois playing at full forward. He amassed 15 goals in his first game for the Roos off the back of some strong marking and accurate kicking from set shots, as well as on the run.
Curtois also proved to be a great organiser of the attacking setup and mindful of seeking players better positions to score.
It was a fine all-round performance and his tally established a new record of goals scored in a single game for the Roos. The previous record was 14 goals held by Liam Brandon in 2007.
Coach Terry Lemon is again guiding the squad and was very pleased with the first round result. From a quick glance at other results, it looks like an interesting season is in store. Many rounds are being played over split weekends due to ADFA/RMC availability.
Getting a gauge on just where each team is during the season will be tricky. The main criterion is the percentage of games won that will determine finals eligibility along with points for and against percentage.
There are four unbeaten teams so far with Yass (one game), Ainslie (one game), Belconnen (two games) and ANU (one game) holding the top four spots.
Next are ADFA/RMC with two wins from three games and Goulburn with one win from two. As you can see, ladder position at this early stage means very little and a team’s form will be hard to judge just by wins.
On Saturday April 29, Yass will go up against the Belconnen Magpies at Holt 102 oval (Kippax, ACT). The game will start at 2.15 pm.
It should be a ripper with both teams undefeated and looking to keep dominance of the competition. The Roos are looking for another strong season and hope to reach that elusive premiership that has been so close (but not quite) over the last few years. Make sure you are on board as a supporter and the club will see you at the next match.
