The component, named ‘Practical scenarios and revision’, forms part of the Secondary Schools Cadet Program, which is linked with the NSW Personal Development, Health and Physical Education (PDHPE) syllabus in years 7–10.
It provides students with insights about fire safety and prevention and helps them develop practical life skills and a general appreciation of community service and volunteering.
The program has been running since 2012. School principal Sandra Hiscock said the initiative “is a strong addition to the curriculum”.
“There’s a great balance of theory and practical activities. It also goes across all age groups,” Ms Hiscock said.
She also praised the NSW RFS for volunteering their time to host the cadet program.
“It’s such a strong example of how community members and organisations help one another,” she said.
Daniel Osborne, operational officer of the Southern Tablelands Zone, said the NSW RFS greatly appreciates the ongoing partnership with Yass High School to the deliver the cadet program.
“The commitment and level of engagement displayed by the students have been commendable,” Mr Osborne said.
During the 10-week program, which will finish on August 2, the students were also exposed to radio communications, hose drills, pumping, first aid and familiarisation with truck and equipment.
