The roof will protect the two containers and their contents. It will also cover the space between the containers and the western wall of the existing workshop.

Bob Nash, president of YVMS, said it would be good for the containers because they heat up.

“It is almost impossible to use them safely or effectively,” Mr Nash said.

“In addition, with a very healthy membership in the high 80s, sometimes there is insufficient room in the current building to accommodate all members who arrive on any particular day,” he said.

The new covered areas will allow for work to occur outside in the shade and out of the weather, as well as provide new outdoor areas for entertainment and social events.

The cost of the project is estimated to be more than $23,000, including in-kind and purchased materials and services.

“The council’s contribution is therefore very welcome and very much appreciated,” Mr Nash said.

“With this enhanced facility, the shed would now be able to offer the men of the Yass Valley and all our visitors even more excellent facilities and the opportunity for increased and enhanced activities.”

“On behalf of all members, thank you to council for this most generous grant,” he said.

YVMS has arranged a contractor to build the roof and is currently preparing a development application.

YVMS aims to complete the roof before summer.

An official opening will be scheduled once the roof is completed. As well, a donors board will be developed and mounted in a prominent position.

YVMS is keen to offer official sponsorship of the 22 lengths of roofing iron that will be used.
