Following a tumultuous 2017, this year looks to be jam-packed with special events which are sure to set local tongues wagging.
The first cab off the rank is the 2018 Yass Touch Knockout. The event takes place annually, and this year will see a gargantuan 102 teams compete against one another.
What makes this event even more special is the fact that this year will mark the 30th anniversary of the event.
What began as a small, local competition in 1988 has now grown to encompass teams from all over the country, and occasionally sees representatives from the professional leagues show up to take part as well.
We can only hope that the turnout for such a huge milestone will be representative of the support that Yass is known for.
I know I’ll be there. I don’t think there’s anything better than setting up shop with a chair, good food, and a few days of high class sport.
Incidentally, the timing of the tournament also couldn’t be better. The Touch Knockout adds to what will be a plethora of sporting entertainment which will be on around the same time.
The Australian Open will be in its final stages during the Australia Day weekend, and the Ashes might be over but there is still a whole ODI series to go.
So why not go and catch a day or two at the Touch Knockout, then go home and enjoy some dinner and the semi-finals of the Aussie Open? Or keep an eye on the cricket while Australia continue their dominance from the Test series?
Whatever your preference, all sport-loving Yassites should have a ball come the Touch Knockout.
And this year, one of the big names to feature will be Scott Prince, the former half-back for the Wests Tigers and the Gold Coast Titans who retired in 2013 after a long and storied 15 year career in the NRL.
And he’s just one of the big names rumoured to show up, come the big weekend it’s possible that there’ll be a few venerated players or ex-players returning to the field for one last go.
Anyway, I can’t wait to see some of the best touch football talent in Australia congregate on Yass for one huge weekend.
What better way to feel patriotic than watching sport on Australia Day? I can’t think of one.
