“Are there any other yass locals who wish we had a bakers delight in yass??? Show your support here!!” Ms McCaffery announced on the Facebook page last Monday.
Other residents leapt at the opportunity to voice their opinion, and Ms McCaffery’s question ended up gathering 129 likes with nearly as many comments.
Some of the comments voiced ardent approval of the prospect of a Bakers Delight.
“Bakers Delight is the only bread I eat... I’ve been saying for months Yass needs a bakery like bakers Delight that’s open 7 days a week,” Jane Dyball said.
“I would looooove a bakers delight to get that big range of yummys,” Debbie Konig added.
However, many locals expressed concern at the thought of another corporation moving into town, and said that they would prefer to support a new locally-run bakery.
“I'd prefer to see a couple of locally owned food options open later and would love it if there was a bakery open 7 days. Franchises and fast food are over rated. I know it must be difficult to justify longer hours, though, with a small community. Would love a green grocer too,” Kyla Quinn said.
Helen Lynch agreed, saying “Hey, your local is going to do far better bread just on the principal that she won’t have to buy crap ingredients from the franchise source at inflated prices...this alone make it worth supporting the local baker.”
The president of the Yass Valley Business Association Chamber, Michael Pilbrow, was in favour of supporting local businesses.
“We already have a great bakery in Yass - Tanks Bakery at Irvine Square - that is locally-owned and opens early in the morning,” Mr Pilbrow said.
“If any local person wants to start their own business or franchise, then I say ‘go for it’ – and the Yass Valley Business Chamber would welcome you with open arms and be very happy to sign your business up accept Yass Valley Gift Cards.”
