Cooma Cottage seeking public input

Chair of the committee, Susan Bell, said that the initiative was part of a multifaceted strategy which aims to achieve several goals. 

“It’s mainly about community activities and having things that are accessible for young families,” Ms Bell said. 

One of the ideas floated thus far by the committee has been a play group, so that parents can come and let their children interact while they relax and socialise. 

Similarly, there have also been suggestions for yoga, tai chi, or a pop-up cafe, all of which is aimed at encouraging patrons of the cottage during traditionally quieter periods of the year. 

Ms Bell initially put up a Facebook post asking for expressions of interest, and got a moderately strong response from the public. 

“There’s probably about half a dozen people following it or who have contacted me,” Ms Bell said.

“We’re trying to attract young families to volunteers … we’re just trying to get improved use of the site.” 

Pennie Rodd Griffiths replied to the online post, saying “Sounds like a great plan Susan, I'm sure there must be groups looking for somewhere to gather... good luck.” 

Although the committee is not unhappy with the cottage as it is, Ms Bell and her associates are aware that there is a need to keep an eye on the future, and ensure that the site continues to draw interest and support once they have retired. 

“Just keeping it fresh and giving it an opportunity to do things,” Ms Bell said. 

“It’s really important that we have a healthy use of the site and continuation of the volunteers.

“Some of them are quite elderly, they already have done it as a retirement job for many years, so we need newer generations getting involved and helping out.”
