Yass Valley Can Assist (YVCA) may now help more cancer patients in the valley thanks to a generous financial donation from the Yass Quick Quilters Club (YQQC).

On Thursday, June 14, YQQC president Glenys Ferguson and fellow members presented a $1750 cheque to YVCA president Cr Geoff Frost at the Yass Valley Community Centre.
The amount was raised from an afternoon tea in May 2018, which invited groups who use the community rooms.
Funds were also raised from a weekly tin on the trading table at YQQC meetings.
Cr Frost thanked YQQC and the organisations that helped the fundraising efforts, saying the amount raised was fantastic.
“About half the amount was raised on one day, which was great.
“The club has got strong community-minded people. They’ve already started on next year, they don’t stop.
“They’re great people – just quietly go about all year and then give us a big cheque at the end of it,” Cr Frost said.
He said that YVCA has nearly 300 patients and the assistance from YQQC and other community organisations help YVCA’s cause.

Ms Ferguson, who was affected by cancer about six years ago, said the work of YVCA has touched her and many other residents, which was the impetus for YQQC to help.
“These guys stepped in to help [me], which was fabulous – there’s quite a lot of us,” she said.
This year has been the second year in which YQQC held a fundraising afternoon tea.
“We had our first event last year for Can Assist and we decided to ask the other groups that use this community section – the U3A History Group and Art Group and the Men’s Shed – if they’d like to join us for afternoon tea to raise money,” Ms Ferguson said.
“We did very well last year, we raised around $800. It was so successful, we decided to do it again this year and make it a bit bigger, which we did.
“We raised roughly the same amount [this year] on the day, but during the whole of last year between the two afternoon teas, we had a sale table every week when we meet on Thursdays where we sold all sorts of things.
“Over that time, we made about $900 from the sales – which we added to our afternoon-tea amount,” Ms Ferguson said.
YQQC meets every Thursday at the Yass Valley Community Centre, Yass Valley Way.
