Yass Magpies U6 BLACK vs North Canberra Bears U6 WHITE
On the coldest day of the year, the mums and dads bones rattled on the sideline while the boys puffed steam from their mouths and noses, more like dragons than magpies - but still keen for footy.
Cruz Dunley started the icy match with a ferocious kick off deep into the oppositions half. Cruz chased down Bear attackers with conviction and when in possession of the ball ran hard, once picking the right moment to hit the accelerator and drive to the try line.
Billy Buser had a shock to the system fresh home from his tropical holiday but he was enthusiastic to get the job done and have fun doing it. Billy was rebellious defending, scored straight from the kick off and again two more times through the game.
Lachlan Kesby was again on fire this week scoring a total of five tries, each with his trademark put down. The bears made multiple breaks and Lachy was like a lion after a gazelle, hunting them down and putting a stop to their pursuits.
Zane Goode has been practicing his step, out weaving the Bears on two occasions to cross the line for his team. Zane had his strongest defensive effort of the year, constantly bringing the bears down with his good solid front on tackles.
Ashton Curtis easily had his best game of the season, topping the tackle count and scoring in the corner. Ashton seemed to never give up, at one point making three tackles in a row.
Toby Waters had some big runs and big tackles, at one point looking like a leaping Valentine Holmes in the corner. Toby’s courage continues to grow, unlucky to be stopped just short of the try line on multiple occasions.
Heath Wood ran the ball with a huge smile on his face, proving how much the boys love the game.
Heath made lots of breaks and his boot lace tackles are improving each week.
With it being cold enough to make a grown man cry, the boys struggled in the conditions but did their best to band together and soldier on as a team. These little Magpies should be very proud of their efforts.
Final score: 52-24
Tries: Lachlan 5, Billy 3, Zane 2, Cruz 1, Ashton 1, Toby 1
Player of the day: Zane Goode
UNDER 6 WHITE
Sunday June 17 saw our most challenging conditions so far this season. On a cold and miserable day, the Under 6 White team started the day in high spirits with everyone participating in the team photos. This saw all the nice, clean and well-presented kids turn into numb, wet and muddy kids by the end of their game.
Taking on the Gungahlin Bulls Red our little Under 6’s went neck and neck with the opposition before going down by one try. The team should be so proud of their performance as they all showed great team spirit and determination in terrible conditions.
Leading from the front were Logan Gray, Travis Mann, Troy Davis and Henry Gooley, all of whom had strong attacking games scoring all the teams tries.
Izabella Blayden was impressive with her strong carries and Sam Master’s fend put many of the opposition on high alert. Both combined well in defence, pulling off some great tackles.
Reese Flynn had some great attacking runs and Jackson Crisp was brave in both attack and defence.
Mark Davis show signs of his best but was forced from the field due to the cold.
Our player of the week went to Logan Gray. Logan had a brilliant game, scoring two great tries and unselfishly putting the team ahead of himself. He always tries his hardest and is one of our most consistent week in, week out.
Once again all the kids should be so proud of themselves and we look forward to playing in Kaleen this weekend.
UNDER 7 WHITE
The Under 7 Whites hosted the Gungahlin Bulls Under 7 Black for a freezing, wet and muddy home game.
The team came out firing off the line to make some great tackles doing well to hold their opponents out a number of times.
The teamwork in tackling throughout the whole game was outstanding and their best effort this year.
Every member pulled off some great runs and tries went to Lucas and Flynn with doubles to Beau and Koby and a hat-trick for Noah.
Their solid effort throughout each quarter saw them come away with a 36-20 win. Player of the match was Charlie who had some amazing runs with the ball and helped out solidly in defence.
Keep up the great work team!
UNDER 8 WHITE
The Under 8 Whites braved the horrible conditions early Sunday morning against Gungahlin Bulls. They played in icy rain and freezing winds, it is the only time I have seen the players asking to come off the field for a rest. The poor kids were frozen.
The team played extremely well given the conditions and came away with a 36-24 win.
All did well in attack with Flynn, Dylan, Tanae and Angus scoring two tries each and Bryson scoring one. Defence was great considering how cold their hands would have been.
Angus got player of the day.
Hopefully next Sunday is a nice day and they can get back out there and do what they love.
UNDER 9 BLACK
It was nothing but a slippery and brown affair for the Under 9 Black team who couldn’t catch a break between the mud and the whistle when they took on the Woden Weston Gold team shivering their way off the field after a 28 – 10 loss.
Lachie Brown was hot to trot and keep warm with some speedy runs and some tackles. Lachie’s speedy legs seen him stay upright while weaving through the play to score a try which he then converted. Lachie also scored himself player of the day.
Logan Collins had what I think was his best game yet all season. He attacked well and scored himself a try which he was unlucky not to convert, and topped the tackle count for the game. He really stepped up today when it was needed.
Sutherland Holliday found himself busted early in the game, copping the full force of the biggest players boot right down the inside of his arm after completing an awesome tackle on him. Not often that there is a bigger player. He tried hard to recover later in the game.
Jack Jamieson also a little under the weather but tried his best like always and was consistent in attack and defence.
William Hall made some great runs from dummy half but couldn’t make it through a good defensive line. William also made some good tackles.
Neve Luckie had a great game and was right up there in the tackle count, with a couple of good runs as well.
Jimmy Regan was his usual fearless self-taking on anything that moved and trying to tackle them to the ground. He made some great saving tackles.
Declan Cooke was consistent in attack and defence but you could definitely see he was cold.
Thanks to Alex Bell, Brodie Poidevin Warden, Angus Kelly and Brock Lenon for getting muddy and wet before your own game to help out the Black team today.
Can’t be anything but proud of the effort the kids playing in such atrocious conditions. Let’s hope there’s a little sunshine next week.
UNDER 9 WHITE
The second game for the Under 9 White ran a similar theme to the first game, except the Queanbeyan Blues Black team took the win 16 – 10.
Fergus Green didn’t let the weather deter him and played his most fearless game yet. He clocked up his most runs yet this year and made a couple of good tackles which the team all cheered him on and encouraged him to do more. Fergus was rewarded player of the day for his improved efforts.
Jack Ryan was strong and consistent in both attack and defence and his efforts were rewarded with the opening try which he converted.
Angus Kelly was everywhere in defence and topped the tackle count for the day. Angus was also strong in attack but couldn’t slip and slide his way across the line.
Alex Bell was strong in attack making ground where he could carrying the defence with him and made a couple of great tackles.
Jed Glover in his first season got a good taste of what it’s like to play a winter sport and slipped and slid into a couple of minor injuries throughout the game. He had some really strong runs where he could but the line was too hard to find today for our little rocket.
Brock Lenon was his usual consistent self in both attack and defence and pumped his legs as hard as he could trying to find the line. He made a couple of great tackles too.
Brodie Poidevin Warden was great in attack today making some really strong runs. The white line eluded him though today.
Lachie Brown backing up from the first game scored the other try today for this game proving he still had more in those speedy legs to give. Sutherland Holliday came around a bit from his first game to give them some good attack and defence support in the second half. Jimmy Regan continued his fearless adventures in attack and defence and Logan Collins was there for support as well.
A great effort team. This mum sure is glad the photos were held the morning before these games. I don’t think the jerseys are going to be the same again for the rest of the season from the mud bath in the middle of our field.
UNDER 11
The Under 11’s were at home against Cooma last Sunday.
A true testament to the commitment of all the kids that took to the field on the day with the conditions being horrendous.
Jayda Danilczak led from the front and terrorised to opposition ball runners with her defence consistently making four or more tackles every set for this display of power tackling Jayda received the player of the match trophy.
A lopsided score line against a younger depleted opposition who never gave up saw Baxter Sicily score two tries and kick a goal also Connor Shepherd crossed for two tries of his own.
Joey Timmer, Kylan Ebert, Oscar Sargent and Will Downey also all crossed for tries and we saw Benson Smith get across the line for his first try of the year.
Goal kickers who converted this week were Jayda, Benson, Trent and Louis.
Overall great sportsmanship was displayed by the whole team and all are to be congratulated on the display.
UNDER 13
The Under 13’s team played their first every Friday night game last weekend against the Sharkies, and the boys excelled in the experience.
It was a freezing cold, drizzly rainy night, but there were plenty of spectators to watch the boys play.
The boys were so excited to play a Friday night game and this could be seen on their faces in the warm up and running on the field.
Shortly after the kick off there was some strong hard running from our boys, who broke the line on a couple of occasions.
It wasn’t long until our captain Lane pushed over for a strong hard running try, with the conversion successful by Coby.
Shortly after Luke scored a well-deserved try. I must say Luke has been playing some good football and is running and tackling just as hard as his brother. Well done Luke, you are going awesome mate.
The Sharkies scored and converted to bring the score closer.
Joe pulled off the try of the season off a nice cross field kick from Lucas, with all the players embracing Joe on a job well done.
The Sharkies scored their second try and converted.
Our fleet footed fullback Timmy scored a nice try as well, and as always with Timmy, the try looked impressive. The try was converted in front of the posts by Coby.
It wasn’t long after and Coby scooted out of dummy half to score and extend our lead.
The match was such a great game to watch, with both attack and defence from both teams impressive.
Cameron topped the tackle count for the second game this season with 17 tackles, with Lochie only just behind with 15. Damo and Jasper both racked up 10 each. What an effort, well done boys.
In attack, there was some great plays and kicks put on by our first receiver Lucas, who is playing a key role in the team, well done Lucas.
The end result was Yass winning their first game of the season 24-12. What a great result and a great game all round by both teams.
Players player went to our flying winger Joe which was well deserved. Joe’s hard work with rarely missing a training session in many years of playing is paying off for Joe, who has really come along in leaps and bounds this year. Well done Joe.
UNDER 17 GIRLS
The Under 17’s Magpies were home to the undefeated Goulburn Stockmen.
In blustery conditions the girls began really well applying a lot of pressure on their opponents forcing the visitors into a number of handling errors.
With the ball the Magpies were equally as effective as they pressured the Goulburn defence and after some really good team work Sydney Harrison finished off a backline move to score the opening try for a 4 – 0 lead.
The girls continued to apply plenty of pressure on Goulburn with their great defence. The Magpies were full of running and Gabbie Davis scored a great try under the posts which she then converted for a 10 – 0 lead to the home team.
The tide then swung to Goulburn following a couple of dubious calls and Goulburn seized their opportunities and scored back to back tries to level the scores at 10 – 10 at the break.
The second half got under way and the magpies were immediately under pressure and Goulburn scored early to lead 14 – 10.
The girls however were not done and mounted plenty of pressure on the Goulburn defence and were very unlucky not to score a couple of times.
The momentum then swung back to the visitors following a couple of penalties and they scored wide out to stretch their lead to 18 – 10.
With the crowd urging them on Tara McGrath West scored a good try adjacent to the posts and with the conversion by Gabbie Davis the magpies trailed by two points with less than two minutes to play.
From the kick off the magpies make good metres and as time ticked along a mid-field kick toward the posts saw Gabbie Davis win the race to the ball however she was illegally taken off the ball and the magpies did not get a deserved penalty and the match ended going the way of the Goulburn Stockman 18 – 16.
It was a truly super effort by all of the girls.
