Sarah Brown is an accomplished and well-known artist based in Alice Springs, who has successfully exhibited her own paintings in the capital cities for more than 30 years, including a sell-out exhibition in Sydney earlier this year.
But painting is her night-time job. Her day job is running the Western Desert Dialysis Program.
Established in 2003 and known as the Purple House, this health service runs clinics in the remote parts of Australia so that Indigenous people, many of them famous artists, whose kidneys have failed can at last get back home to their own country.
“I live in a part of the country where many people paint. Their paintings are imbued with stories, with tradition, with meaning. Mine come from a long tradition of European landscape painters. They are about light and form and colour. But for me each of these paintings also hold memories. Memories of trips with Indigenous friends back to country, of picnics and afternoon walks. Of visiting our nurses and dialysis patients out bush,” Ms Brown says.
The official exhibition opening is at 2pm, Sunday, July and it is open to all.
