Yass High School sheep tops SELX

The school’s agriculture teacher Philip Armour said it was quite a surprise.

“The sheep market’s been good for some time and we’ve sold quite a few between the $140-$160 mark, that’s what we were expecting again, so to get over $200 is extremely good,” he said.

The agriculture students at Yass High have been involved throughout the process of getting the lambs ready for the sales yards.

At the school, home to Flat Rock White Suffolk Stud, the students learn about everything from synchronising lambing, weighing, fat scoring, shearing, drenching and selecting the lambs to sell.

The school helps the students to gain experience across the agricultural board, preparing them to enter the industry later on.

Jason Davis (photographed above), a Year 10 student at Yass High, is part of Mr Armour’s agriculture class and works at SELX each weekend.

Mr Armour said he’s been overseeing everything that’s been happening with the lambs up to last week’s sale and has gained great experience at the sales yards.

Next stop: Dubbo. Students will be taking a group of wethers to enter into a statewide schools competition, in association with the Dubbo Sheep Show, week beginning August 27.
