The stone monument with inscriptions - in memory of those from Yass who served in the First World War - is having a new granite wall erected around it.
The enhancement of approximately $30,000 will reinforce the historical importance of the monument.
The upgrade has been funded by Yass RSL sub-branch ($10,000), the 2018 Armistice Centenary Grant Program ($10,000) and Yass Soldiers Club ($10,000).
Yass Valley Council waved development application fees and agreed to subsidise up to $3,000 of structural costs and repairs to the pavement from the works.
The local federal member, The Hon Mike Kelly AM MP and Australian Cemetery Supplies have also supported the project.
“It’s our generation’s contribution,” said Yass RSL sub-branch honorary secretary John Heggart.
The new granite wall will be at the centre of this year’s Remembrance Day commemorations in Yass.
The service will be held at the cenotaph, in front of Yass Soldiers’ Memorial Hall, on Sunday, November 11, at 10.30am for a 10.40am start.
“Remembrance Day this year marks the 100th anniversary of the end of the First World War in 1918,” Mr Heggart said.
“Australia paid a heavy price for its involvement in the First World War in terms of lives lost and casualties; more than 60,000 were killed and 156,000 were wounded, gassed or taken prisoner.”
“The First World War had a significant impact on our country that is still felt today, not least the birth of the Anzacs and the Anzac spirit,” Heggart said.
“The wall will be dedicated at the Remembrance service in memory of those from Yass and surrounding areas who gave so much in defence of our values and to ensure our freedom lives on.”
