This week is the Aussie Backyard Bird Count when everyone is asked to spend 20 minutes in their garden or outdoors and record the birds they see.
The special event, held by BirdLife Australia, runs until this Sunday, October 28, so you’ve still got plenty of time to get out there.
Download the Aussie Bird Count app and identify local birds based on their size, colour and location. You can also see which other birds have been spotted in the area on the Sightings Map on the app.
Local bird watchers have already recorded six of Australia’s raptor species in the area, including the Brown Falcon, Brown Goshawk, Nankeen Kestrel, Peregrine Falcon, Southern Boobook and the Wedge-tailed Eagle during this year’s count.
Last year, more than 72,000 Australians joined the Backyard Bird Count and recorded 1.9 million birds.
BirdLife Australia’s Sean Dooley said the data collected by Australians in the event’s past four years has been helping the organisation gain a unique insight into changing bird populations.
“Australia is home to some of the world’s most beautiful birds,” Mr Dooley said.
