Rory Wade, aged 18, from Jeir, Yass Valley has developed a technology to make distilling alcohol easier.
It must be good too, winning first place in the Year 11-12 category at the Young ICT Explorers National Finals 2018. Mr Wade is also seeing if the system could help distillers far and wide in the future.
Young ICT Explorers is a competition that encourages school students to pursue information and communication technology (ICT) related projects and Mr Wade worked on the system for around a year at Dickson College, ACT.
Mr Wade wanted to see if he could create something that would save his father from spending long hours each day, checking the still in their home shed.
Effectively, the system allows the distiller to control the temperature and flow inside of the still from a computer, meaning they don’t always have to be on-site.
There are systems like this on the market, but they’re expensive and not necessarily versatile, according to Mr Wade.
“The automation should work for the distiller,” he said.
