The Ginninderry SPARK Training and Employment Initiative runs over 14 weeks and has helped 25 people to gain accredited training and 14 people to secure work in the past two years.
The program combines theory and practical learning, and offers the following training:
- A Certificate II in Construction Pathways (CPC20211)
- A White Card ticket
- An Asbestos Awareness ticket
- Industry specific training at a live training site with projects to include – concreting, paving, painting, construction of retaining walls, timber form work, use of hand and power tools and landscaping.
At 19 years old, Matthew Rice, from Murrumbateman, was able to secure an apprenticeship after completing the 2018 program.
“He was so shy at the beginning. He lived in Murrumbateman, so didn’t know a lot of the local Yass people on the program. However, Matt gained so much confidence in himself during the program; he came out of his shell and ended up being one of the popular participants who got along with anyone,” Ginninderry training and employment manager Emma Sckrabei said.
Mr Rice met Marissa Hensley from 1300 Apprentice at an industry barbecue hosted by SPARK. He secured an interview and was successful in getting an electrical apprenticeship.
“My apprenticeship is going really well, I just finished my first three months,” Mr Rice said. “I’m doing fine personally; it’s good to finally have a proper job.”
There are many other stories like these connected to the program, helping people of all ages acquire the skills and experience to find work.
Participants at the time of enrollment must be:
- 17 years old or over
- Living or working in NSW
- An Australian citizen, Australian permanent resident, humanitarian visa holder or New Zealand citizen
- Not enrolled in or attending secondary school or college
The enrollment session is mandatory and is on Tuesday, February 19 at 10.30am at the TAFE NSW Yass Campus, 51 Church St, Yass.
The program will then start on Tuesday, March 12 and run three days a week for 14 weeks.
