Building relationships with each other, educators and the wider community are all important aspects of life at Yass Pre-Kindergarten.
Director Hannah Edwards said Yass Pre-Kindergarten is a 39 place centre, the smallest long day care centre in Yass. “We are a close-knit community, with a very family orientated atmosphere and a wonderful sense of belonging.” she said
“In just our first year of operation we achieved an exceeding rating in many elements of the National Quality Standard and the centre has since grown from strength to strength. With loyal and experienced professional educators and a low staff turnover, Yass Pre-Kindergarten stands out for providing families with consistency, familiarity, quality education and care and an extension of the home and family.”
Ms Edwards said that Yass Pre-Kindergarten had established a number of strong partnerships within the community.
“We have important partnerships with the local primary schools, aiming to bridge the gap between preschool and the transition to primary school for children.
“We engage in community events with the children as often as possible. For example, we’ve had the honour of marching with our children and families on ANZAC day in Yass for the past 3 years.
“Educators often invite community members into the service to share their expertise and knowledge with the children (e.g. health services, emergency services and Indigenous community members).
“Perhaps one of the children’s most valuable partnerships is with Warmington Lodge Nursing Home. The children absolutely love visiting the residents and have gained some long lasting connections while learning to interact in relation to others with care, empathy and respect.
“Developing links to our community is of strong importance for our service, families and the children in our care so that they too can develop a sense of belonging and an understanding of active community participation,” she said.
Now comprising a team of nine Early Childhood Educators, Yass Pre-Kindergarten started in November 2014 in response to high demand for long day care. The approved provider of Yass Pre-Kindergarten, Early Education Initiative Pty Ltd, had been operating its sister centre, McKellar Cottage, in Canberra since 2011.
Ms Edwards said Yass Pre-Kindergarten provides programs based on the Early Years Learning Framework and children’s evolving interests. “The purpose built centre and natural outdoor environments support educators in developing innovative and engaging experiences that excite children,” she said.
