The association now has a membership to suit farms of all shapes and sizes, including a full producer membership and small farm membership.
The association depends on the local membership to contribute to innovation in the agricultural industry and policy development, to help grow local food and fibre production.
In addition to NSW Farmers membership, farmers discussed a range of local and state-wide issues that should be prioritised in the lead up to the state election. This includes boosting local weed management through adopting a community approach, and how to encourage and assist young farmers to advance their farm businesses.
The banking royal commission also headlined discussions, with the commission’s report targeting banks for misconduct to many of their customers, some of which were local farmers. The branch hopes that this this royal commission will bring justice and result in changes to rural financing.
Farmers also highlighted the need for Q-fever vaccinations to become more accessible to the rural communities, as so many people are affected by this disease when it could be easily prevented by a simple vaccination. The vaccination is vital for people working in the agriculture industry, and the federal government should play a part by placing it on the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme.
NSW Farmers plays a key role in supporting farmers on issues such as these and value the input of local branches in lobbying and research activities.
