The ACT secretary of the Construction, Forestry, Mining and Energy Union, Jason O'Mara, was at home with his wife and children when a series of shots were fired into his house about 10.20pm.

Mr O'Mara was unavailable for comment about the incident, however, the secretary of the union's construction division, Dave Noonan, confirmed the shooting took place.

"I can confirm that a number of shots were fired into Jason's home last night," Mr Noonan said.

"He was there and his family were there.

"NSW police attended and are investigating and at this stage, we don't intend to add anything else while police conduct their investigation."

He expressed the high level of concern around the incident shared by the union's executive and staff.

Murrumbateman is a sleepy rural NSW hamlet on the Barton Highway between Canberra and Yass. It falls within the Hume division of the Yass police patrol district.

The Murrumbateman street where the shots were fired is remote from the main community and comprises mostly small acreage allotments.

Acting Inspector David Cowell, of Yass police, said that police were called to a home about 10.30pm on the Tuesday night following reports that shots had been fired into the home.

Attending officers then established a crime scene.

"The occupants of the home were uninjured," he said.

No arrests have been made yet, Acting Inspector Cowell said on March 19.

A police forensics team from Goulburn attended, and the house and immediate area became a crime scene.

The crime scene restriction was not lifted until the next morning.

Police would not confirm the number of shots fired, nor what parts of the house were struck by bullets.

Mr O'Mara assumed the prominent role of ACT secretary of the CFMEU around a year ago, filling the position previously held for eight years by Dean Hall.
