Mary Kiani always knew she wanted to be a singer. She says she used to imagine that she was famous, holding mini-concerts in the bathroom.

Kiani's passion for music stayed with her through school and at the age of 14, she joined a band. This led to performances and Kiani later joined a recording studio.
She will be coming to Yass on Sunday, July 28 to perform her set, 'A Very 'Mary' Christmas in July' at Yazzbar. The audience can expect a Christmas themed performance that includes jazz and festive songs.
Kiani has toured the United States with Donny Osmond and sang with many big singers in the UK including China Crisis and pop duo Hue and Cry. She even supported Prince.
Kiani eventually joined The Time Frequency, which became huge in the '90s. There was a rave scene at the time and the band ended up with number one songs, hit singles and even performed on Top of the Pops, a major UK television show.
At this time, Kiani was still with the band but eventually secured her own record deal. She ended up with eight top 40 songs in the UK and toured all over the world.
Her song 'I Imagine' became big in Australia and the Scottish-born singer was invited over here. The first time she visited she fell in love with the country and ended up performing at just about every nightclub, becoming very involved with the community and meeting new musicians.
She calls strong, hardworking women her role models and her idols include Regina Belle and Aretha Franklin.
Kiani has worked with people all over the world, in the best studios, but speaks of how it matters more to meet people you can vibe with and understand.
When speaking about her life journey, she said life was a struggle but, "If you're up and down just sing it out."
A knee operation has recently hindered her movements. Thankfully, she still gets by singing and teaching lessons. She loves her job and says music and her children are the most vital part of her life.
Kiani said she is looking forward to performing at Yazzbar and sharing her music alongside a new audience.
