Fire and Rescue NSW: Apply to become a retained firefighter

Fire and Rescue NSW Station 511 Yass is looking for women and men to join its family of retained (on call) firefighters.

This is an opportunity for anyone wanting to pick up an additional income, learn new skills and serve the community in a close-knit team, Captain Scott Lang said.

The station is holding a Recruitment Information Night on June 29 for those interested to find out about the role of a retained firefighter and ask any questions.

Captain Lang said there are several positions available at the station and successful applicants can expect to take on an exciting and dynamic role.

"No two days are the same," Captain Lang said. "You could be responding to fires, hazardous materials or a rescue mission, while other times you may be engaging the community with fire safety."

"We can fit in with your work life if you can fit in with ours.

"We're basically a second family."

Captain Lang said the station is interested in people with a diverse range of backgrounds and skill sets.

The newest class of Fire and Rescue NSW graduates included a builder, commercial diver, lifeguard, physiotherapist and youth worker.

To join, there is an online application, followed by an interview, physical aptitude test and medical screening.

"Successful applicants then undergo two stages of training and some station-based training, with the option to learn other specialist skills such as rescue," Captain Lang said.

"During that time, you'll be building relationships with the crew and the confidence to be on call," he said.

The Recruitment Information Night is on July 29, from 6.30-9pm, at the station: 90 Meehan Street, Yass.

There will be a series of information nights held over the coming months, Captain Lang said.

You can also contact Captain Lang on 0432 869 735 for information before next Monday.

Applications are open now and will remain open until all of the available positions have been filled.
