Around 12.35pm today, a head-on collision occurred between two vehicles on Sutton Road at Sutton near Wattle Flat Road.
The vehicles caught fire after the crash and one person died at the scene, NSW Police said.
Reports were made to NSW Ambulance of a person trapped on the Sutton Road Bridge after the collision, NSW Ambulance Inspector Stephen Pollard said.
Another person involved in the collision, a female patient whose age is unknown, is being treated for wrist and chest injuries, he said.
"She was loaded aboard the Rescue Helicopter and will be airlifted to Canberra Hospital in a serious but stable condition," NSW Ambulance Inspector Stephen Pollard said.
The road is expected to be closed in both directions for several hours.
Diversions are in place at the intersection of Sutton Road and the Federal Highway, Sutton and Norton Road and Sutton Road, Queanbeyan.
Inquiries continue and a report will be prepared for the coroner.
"Today's tragedy is a timely reminder for everyone to be vigilant when driving, particularly on remote roads," Inspector Pollard said.
