The fire began around 9am and residents were outside as firefighters rushed inside to rescue their animals.

There were concerns for the whereabouts of the family's cat, Sylvester.

However, all of the animals were saved, Fire and Rescue NSW Station 511 Yass Captain Scott Lang said.

There were four dogs, two cats and birds inside the house.

Lance Rufford-Sharpe lives in the house with his two daughters.

"We moved here in February 2017, after we sold the farm and Mum died," one of the daughters, Emmy-Lu Rufford-Sharpe said.

Their mother's ashes were inside and the family was concerned they would lose them.

"We want Mum's ashes more than anything," Ms Rufford-Sharpe said.

Firefighters were able to rescue the ashes, Captain Lang said.

Ms Rufford-Sharpe was at work when she got a call from her sister to say there was a fire at home.

"I don't know what happened," she said. "Hopefully everything will be okay."

A bedroom at the front of the house was fully engulfed. The windows had been broken and a significant amount of smoke was pouring from the room and front door.

However, firefighters were able to contain the fire to the bedroom.

"I'm pleased the crews were able to contain it," Captain Lang said. "The cause is unknown but we don't believe it's suspicious."

Neighbours were offering their condolences and support to the family at the time of the fire.

Everyone should have smoke alarms installed and an evacuation plan, Captain Lang said.

Fire and Rescue NSW Station 511 Yass has handed over the incident to police.
