This rule has been changed to improve the safety of emergency services personnel, and tow truck operators and breakdown assistance providers working on the road, as well as the people they are helping.
On higher speed roads (with a speed limit of 90km/h or more), motorists are required to slow down safely to a speed that is reasonable for the circumstances.
Motorists must also provide sufficient space between their vehicle and the stationary tow truck, breakdown assistance or emergency vehicle displaying flashing lights.
This will include changing lanes on a multi-lane road if it is safe to do so.
During times of seasonal emergency being experienced in NSW it is important to think of those required to go above and beyond their normal duties and their safety.
Emergency workers are already engaged in extreme activities and their safety is important now more than ever.
The rule change is called 'Sarah's Rules' in memory of Sarah Frazer and tow truck driver Geoff Clark, who both tragically lost their lives in 2012 when they were struck following Sarah's car breaking down in the Southern Highlands.
Bushfire and natural disasters will dominate the news feeds over the coming days, weeks and months.
Remember to check on family, friends and neighbours.
