The house on Greig Place was well alight when Murrumbateman and Springfield Rural Fire Brigades and Fire and Rescue NSW Station Yass 511 arrived on scene at 2am.
The fire also destroyed the residents' car and spread to the grass a few metres around the house, Murrumbateman Rural Fire Brigade Captain Richard Alley said.
Firefighters did, however, save the residents' truck and stop the fire from spreading any further, Captain Alley said.
There were no injuries, however, the fire is being investigated by NSW Police and NSW Rural Fire Service.
The home owners weren't in the house at the time the fire started and were in shock when they arrived, Captain Alley said.
Neighbours had alerted them to the fire, he said.
Murrumbateman resident Anna Marsden lives about 200 metres away from the fire and called triple zero.
"It was fully roaring. I raced into the bathroom where my phone was on charge and called triple zero," Ms Marsden said.
"By the time I got to report it, the person I spoke to said they had three reports.
"We were lucky the wind was light so we weren't being showered by any embers but I was worried.
"I spent the rest of the night patrolling the boundary to our property. If there had been a single spark it could have been disastrous.
"The firefighters are heroes," Ms Marsden said.
She said another neighbour told her she heard loud bangs before the fire started.
Dry dams meant firefighters had to travel back and forth to the village water supply at the cemetery, Captain Alley said.
The firefighters remained on scene until 5am and will conduct regular patrols of the incident throughout Thursday given the Extreme Fire Danger rating forecast for the area, NSW RFS operational officer - Southern Tablelands Zone, Michael Gapps, said.
Police and essential energy have also attended the scene, Mr Gapps said.
Anyone with further information is encouraged to contact police.
