Remembering the names of the Bondi Beach terror victims

Rabbis, a retired police officer and a young girl are among the 15 victims killed in the terror attack at Bondi Beach.

MATILDA, aged 10

The 10-year-old was attending the Hanukkah gathering with her family. In a statement, her school said Matilda would be remembered "with love, grief and deep sorrow, and we honour her memory by standing together in compassion". Hers was the youngest life lost in the tragic event.

EDITH BRUTMAN

The vice-president of an anti-discrimination committee at B'nai B'rith NSW, Edith Brutman is the most recent person to have been identified among the 15 people killed at Chanukah by the Sea.

RABBI ELI SCHLANGER, 41

Fondly known as the Bondi Rabbi, London-born Eli Schlanger was the organiser behind the Chanukah by the Sea event. An influential member of the community, he also served as a chaplain for NSW Corrective Services and St Vincent's Hospital. He is survived by his wife, five children, his parents and eight siblings.

DAN ELKAYAM, 27

A French national who moved to Australia a year ago to work in engineering, Dan Elkayam was a Premier League 1 player for Rockdale Ilinden Football Club. A friend told Le Parisien that "he really embodied diversity; he didn't discriminate based on religion. He was a light for everyone."

ALEX KLEYTMAN, 87

A Ukrainian-born Holocaust survivor, Alex Kleytman's life was defined by resilience and courage until the end. His wife of more than five decades Larisa told The Australian that he moved to cover her as others fell around him. He is survived by Larisa, his two children and 11 grandchildren.

RABBI YAAKOV LEVITAN, 39

Originally from Johannesburg, South Africa, Rabbi Yaakov Levitan was the general manager of Chabad of Bondi and the secretary of the Sydney Beth Din (Rabbinical court, responsible for matters of religious laws). He is survived by his wife and four children aged from six to 16.

PETER MEAGHER, 61

A retired detective sergeant for NSW Police, Peter Meagher was pursuing his passion for photography when he was killed on assignment covering the Chanukah by the Sea event. He was also a much-loved member of NSW Rugby, who knew him affectionately as "Marzo".

REUVEN MORRISON, 62

One of the heroes who stood up in the face of the terror unfolding around him, Reuven Morrison's daughter Sheina Gutnick has confirmed he was the man seen throwing a brick at one of the gunmen after he was disarmed by Ahmed Al Ahmed. In a statement posted to LinkedIn, Ms Gutnick said: "He did not cower. He did not lay low. He sprang to action. To fight. He was a man bigger than life itself."

MARIKA POGANY, 82

Another Holocaust survivor, Hungarian-born Marika Pogany still returned to Komarno in Slovakia every year to remember Holocaust victims after decades living in Australia. A community volunteer, she delivered 12,000 Kosher Meals on Wheels over more than two decades. 

TIBOR WEITZEN, 78

Remembered as the patriarch of the Chabad of Bondi community, Tibor Weitzen died trying to shield a family friend. He was known affectionately as The Lollipop Man for his custom of handing out the sweets to children at Shul. His grandson, Mendy Amzalak, was a first responder who found his body at the scene.

OTHERS

Other victims of the massacre are yet to be publicly identified. Another 42 people were injured, including three who remain in a critical condition in hospital.

One of the shooters, aged 50, was killed by police. The other, aged 24, remains in hospital and is expected to be charged at a later date.
