Fast forward to April–May 2018 and the 48-year-old will be doing it all over again. Same purpose, same path – Parkes through Eugowra, Canowindra, Cowra, Boorowa, Harden and into Bowning, Yass and Murrumbateman before finally reaching Canberra.
In 2016, the loss of her cousin, Annie Lymbrery, from brain cancer at 62 years old, spurred Ms Randell on to take action.
At the time, Ms Randell said it was a shock to everyone who knew her. “It was really that we had no idea and then were given such a short amount of time with her when we found out.”
“We lost her, but it was just her willpower to stick around for as long as she did.”
Thanks to her walk in 2016, Ms Randell was recognised by the Cancer Council as the Ambassador for Central West NSW.
Ms Randell said another motivation for the 2018 journey was for a boy in Parkes who was recently diagnosed with brain cancer.
“He was around three or four years old. They operated on him, but the tumor came back and he lost sight in both eyes. There’s just a lot of younger kids getting brain cancer,” Ms Randell said.
“So it’s not just for myself.”
Accompanying her walk will be Stewart Pasfield, who also tackled the trek in 2016.
