While the women enjoyed a well-earned bye in the State League Division Five following their thunderous win over Narrabundah last week, the men’s teams in State Leagues Three, Seven, and Eight enjoyed varying levels of success.
It was a blustery weekend, with the strong winds and overcast weather the first true sign that winter is coming for 2018. These conditions made it difficult for the players and, particularly for the third division men, made for a close match.
The Redbacks played the Gundaroo Bullocks in Bruce in the third grade clash, continuing a rivalry which produced sparks last year.
Despite the weather, the Redbacks were able to overcome the 1-1 score at half time and score a crucial second half goal, which secured victory 2-0.
Things were not as fortuitous for the Division Seven Redbacks team, who were up against Gungahlin United at Walker Park.
The teams were tightly locked at 1-1 when the half-time whistle blew, however Gungahlin piled on three more goals to Yass’s one in the second half to claim the win at 4-2.
The Division Eight team had an entirely forgettable day, when they played off against Western Molonglo at Waramanga.
A 1-0 lead for Western Molonglo at half-time quickly blew out into a 4-1 win by full-time.
