On Saturday night, Goulburn hosted the second in a new series of Fight Night designed to promote amateur boxing in the region, and a Yass stalwart was on hand to help in the best way he knows how.

Spider, Yass’s own boxing veteran, fought during the last bout of the night. His opponent was the much taller and rangier Peter Shuetrim, and Spider knew that he would have to make allowances for their height difference during the fight.
“I knew he would probably wanna try and use his reach, because he’s so much bigger than me,” Spider said.
“It was up to me to try and nullify his advantage. I think I did an alright job of taking a bit of his reach off him.”
The 45-year-old proved very difficult to score off; he slipped Shuetrim’s punches effectively due to his condition of being “allergic to getting hit.”
“Movement’s a big part of my game,” Spider said. “Getting out of the way is usually a good idea.”
The Fight Night featured 25 bouts, with almost half of the scheduled fighters coming from Canberra to compete.
Event organiser Larry Daniela said he was extremely pleased with the event, and hoped to see local support for the fight nights continue to increase.
“I think it was another great event,” Daniela said.
“What I like about it is that people are embracing the fact that they’re having tournaments in Goulburn once again.
“We had 22 fighters from ACT come, and all the rest were from different parts of NSW, but they’re actually wanting to get in these tournaments.
“There’s a lot of people in the Goulburn community that have really embraced it.”
The Goulburn community and beyond: there were many spectators present who had also travelled from Canberra to view the fights, some in support of specific competitors and some purely out of interest.
A particular goal of Daniela’s is to make boxing more accessible to families.
“We get a lot of kids involved [in running the tournaments], because when the kids are involved, the parents see ‘well this is a good environment’,” he said.
The next boxing event in Goulburn will be a Battle of the States on July 17.
