Round 10 saw the Under 9’s White head to Weetangera to take on Wests in a bid to reach the semi-finals. Numbers were tight with only eight members managing to make it to the ground, including two of the Black team (Samuel Leighton, and Brodie Hogan, very many thanks boys).
The first half saw Wests kick off and for the ball to go into touch in Yass’ half. The lineout was won by Yass and through runs by Samuel, great cleaning out by Angus, Jack and Brodie, the Whites were able to score the first try by Lachie stepping through the opposition.
This marked a fantastic half by the Whites, with dedicated straight running lead by Samuel, and Angus, and fierce cleaning out by Lachie, Brodie and Simon Bremner.
The scrums as always were well led by Katie Leseburg, who also narrowly missed pilfering the opposition ball at a number of breakdowns.
Some good marshalling at the breakdown by Digby, passing the ball out saw more tries come to Lachie, Brodie and Angus in the first half. Yass lead at the break by six tries to one.
The second half Wests woke up, caught Yass knapping, and in quick succession scored two tries.
Yass, quickly realising that they had to work hard and tackle, were lead brilliantly by Samuel and Angus again, with exceptional tackling and cleaning out, helped by Lachie, Katie and Simon, almost counter rucking and stealing possession a number of times.
Rampaging runs right through the middle of Wests by Jack Shannon, Brodie Hogan, and Samuel in the second half set up another five tries. The second half was a much closer affair, however, a fantastic team effort saw the Yass Whites take the game 55 to 25.
Under 12’s v Gungahlin Eagles
It was a warm but windy Saturday as Priceline Pharmacy Under 12’s fronted Gungahlin Eagles at Victoria Park.
An early upset looked on the cards when a break saw Hamish Walker reach the line for an unconverted goal before a stunned Gungahlin side had time to warm up. Waking from their daze, the opposition fought back with a try and conversion in the first 20 minutes.
Strong scrums were the order of the day. Ben showed off his strong playing skills and Charlie Hall’s tackling was exceptional.
Second half saw a keen display of strength by Henry in the scrums. Strong defence this week saw Malachi take control of the ball, running more than half way down the field. Henry once again showed off his skill, caught a Marist kick from up high, followed by some quick tackling by Sam.
Speedy footwork by Sam made some of the Eagles team dizzy, enabling Louie to make a break with the ball, getting it over the line. Charlie followed this up, taking most of the length of the field before an Eagles intercept.
Players from both sides utilised the strong gusts to direct play in their favour.
Despite the strong efforts of the Yass side, Gungahlin won by two tries, resulting in a score of 38-20.
