The event was promoted by the Professional Golfers Association (PGA), and Cole said that when he heard about it, he leapt at the chance to take part.
The issue is a particularly personal one for Cole, as his former boss was recently diagnosed with cancer as a single father of three, having already lost his wife to breast cancer 13 years ago.
“He was very instrumental in where I am now as a golf professional. He helped me get [here],” Cole said. “Finding out that he’s got cancer and got three young kids, I thought anything I can do to raise awareness and raise funds ... it’s going to be a big day, but it’s nothing compared to the road ahead for him.”
It will be a big day, indeed; Cole plans to play 72 holes of golf across 12 hours, which will include walking 25 kilometres, carrying his golf bag the entire way.
“I might have bitten off more than I can chew, but I’m gonna do it,” Cole said. “I’ll probably start at 5.30 or 6 o’clock in the morning and – provided I get a few people to bring me a coffee on the way around in the first few hours – I think I’ll be okay.
“I could drive around in a golf cart, but to me that defeats the purpose. It’s got to be tough, it’s got to be hard, it’s got to be real. There’s no point doing it if there’s no cost to myself.”
Having announced his intentions on Facebook just over a week ago, Cole said that he had already been sent numerous messages of support from the community.
“There’s a fair few people who have commented to me via Facebook or private message or text,” he said. “And a lot of the members are coming in and saying, ‘We see what you’re doing; it’s great’.”
As an added incentive, Cole has promised to offer interested golfers some technical tips on the day, provided they donate to the cause.
Cole has set his fundraising target at $10,000. “When I was writing it out, I thought, ‘What can I raise?’ And I thought, ‘Well, why not?’” he said. “I know it's a lot, but you’ve got to start somewhere.”
