The 25-year-old from Karabar in Queanbeyan was travelling south on Sutton Road when a kangaroo jumped out in front, acting Inspector Ben Bowles of Queanbeyan Police Station said.
There was also a female passenger riding on the 2008 BMW, acting Inspector Bowles said.
Paramedics and police were called to the scene around 8pm.
There was a doctor already on scene when paramedics arrived, a spokesperson for NSW Ambulance said.
The male had sustained a brain injury and couldn't feel his legs. He was taken to a Canberra hospital in a critical condition, the spokesperson said.
The 24-year-old female passenger from the Australian Capital Territory sustained a right leg injury but was taken to a Canberra hospital in a stable condition, the spokesperson said.
