So it is with Glen Gillam.

The world champion woodchopper was present at the Murrumbateman Field Days event on Saturday, and quickly drew the attention of spectators.

"Catch the woodchop competition today and see Glenn Gillam in action!" announced the Fields Days' official Facebook page.

Gillam is the current owner of the Royal Sydney Show's 15 Inch Underhand title, which he said was the "most prestigious event in the sport".

Standing at 186 centimetres and weighing in at 125kg, it is no surprise that Gillam shatters logs with ease; he looks as though he could do it quickly enough with his bare hands.

But the man-mountain is gentle and well-spoken when he steps away from the competition, and explained that woodchopping runs in his blood.

"I've had an axe in my hand since I could walk," Gillam said.

"I just followed the family footsteps. It's just something that I've done week in, week out with my family, and now it's something I do with my [kids]."

Hailing from Toongabbie, Victoria, Gillam and his family travel all over the east coast for his competitions.

Aside from the sporting aspect, Gillam regards it as a good way to spend time with his family.

"Family enjoyment, a place to travel to on the weekend and take the family somewhere, new activities, and just enjoying the woodchopping throughout Australia" were the reasons he listed for his decision to compete in Murrumbateman.

After a brief hiatus from the sport, Gillam has made a habit of gathering headlines in recent years.

In 2015, he broke a 50-year-old world woodchopping record, which won him $50,000.

After his world title victory in Sydney at the start of 2018, Gillam was named in the Australian team which claimed victory in the Timbersports World Championships in Liverpool, England, later that year.
